Frequently Asked Questions

Why join the Smeal Business Club?

Some of the many benefits of membership include greater access to professional networking and social bases, while continuing to maintain close ties to the Smeal College of Business. The Philadelphia Chapter is just one of the many chapters nationwide.

What is the purpose of the club?

The Smeal Business Club is dedicated to enriching the professional lives of Smeal College alumni in the greater Philadelphia area by providing opportunities for personal and professional development, networking, and social interaction; and to support the advancement of the Smeal College, the Pennsylvania State University, and the Alumni Association.

What are the benefits of membership?

Aside from the extensive opportunities for Smeal alumni to expand their professional networking sector, the Club offers a variety of social events for members and non-members alike; the benefit of membership at these events is a discounted rate for social affairs and at least one free event per year.

How much does it cost?

The annual dues are low - only $50.00 to defray the cost of social events.

I’m already a member of a Penn State Alumni Group.  Why do I have to make an additional payment?

Membership in the Philadelphia Chapter of the Smeal Business Club is separate from membership in the Penn State Alumni Association and other alumni groups.  Members of the Penn State Alumni Association are not automatically members of the Smeal Business Club; likewise, one need not be a member of the Penn State Alumni Association to join.  Our annual dues are kept low and only necessary to ensure that the Club can pay expenses and to sponsor various events throughout the year.

What types of industries/companies are represented in the Club?

Our Club represents a myriad of industries, including financial organizations, consulting firms, consumer packaged goods, and technology firms - to name a few.  Our members’ employers range from small businesses to major corporations. Moreover, our Club features professionals at all levels of their careers.

What are some activities/events in which the Club participates?

Recent past events include such diverse and fun activities as a presentation by Dean Thomas at the Pyramid Club, networking at the Irish Pub, a private tour at the QVC headquarters, and a tailgate at the Penn State vs. Temple football game. Currently, we are having monthly business roundtable breakfast discussions and have many events in the queue, including speaking engagements and Happy Hours.

When are events usually held?

We have events at least once a quarter, but breakfast roundtable discussions are monthly. We strive to offer a variety of networking arenas, including dinners, private tours, networking socials, and distinguished speakers.  Since our members have different professional, social, and personal schedules, we hold events in the morning and evening to accommodate everyone’s schedule.

Where do events take place?

Events take place both in Philadelphia as well as in the surrounding suburbs.
